Heidegger and Technology

Mathematization of nature

In 1623, Galileo said that “the great book of nature is written in mathematical symbols.” This thesis is the founding of modern science. This is the a priori assumption that justifies the exclusive use of mathematics. Know the nature is measuring quantities and equations. A quantitative physical mathematized is built on it: it reduces the local movement to movement, and causality to the moving cause. From there to say that being is reduced to the amount actually measured, there is only one step. They forget that science is only a point of view on reality. Science can not itself be aware of their limitations. She does not question the assumptions of his approach. Reflection on science is not science (mathematics do not explain what they are). In this sense, we can say that it “does not think.” It operates according to its rules, in the dimension that is his: it “computes.”

Scientific truth and the truth

All truth is not scientific. The life of every day we start in place of the element of truth, without us having to do science. Scientific truth (exact calculations of quantities) has provided opportunity to access first being that we have naturally. This is the fundamental truth. For a truth to be possible (the act of saying something that is), you must be in immediate contact with being. Science is only one way to know the other being to which we have access. Its prestige has only its effectiveness but it may be that the efficiency is not the final word of knowledge. Note that the proposition that there is truth and scientific evidence of its falsity itself: it claims to be true, or it is not scientific, since it is no science, but it reflects on . She is philosophical.

Heidegger and Technology

Heidegger discovers a global project: the technique. It should not be understood here as a technical “art of making tools”, in which case there would be continuity between the ancient technique and modern technology. No, there is a difference between the two definitions. Modern technology is a new way of representing the world – as to be used, available by human beings. Nothing should escape the domination of the will, everything is ordered to submit to it, even life. The technique has no purpose, if not herself. The only purpose is proposing the modern world is the proliferation of ways! So do you multiply the means of communication without asking if we have something to say. Why go further, higher, faster? What is the purpose? Can we seriously believe in the ideology of “happiness in progress”? The technique itself produces the need to reinforce its domination. The planet becomes uniform, nothing, no mystery, or sacred, can not resist the invasion, everything is finally ordered to prove his value to the development of technology, or disappear. Life itself is understood in its light: a good life is a life efficient, cost effective, “creative”. Understand it: the danger, it is not the machines or their use, but the essence of the technique, that is to say, the relation to being on which it is based. The “technical report to be” is destructive of the essence of man, which is the opening to the contemplation of the mystery of existence, without any help. The release will come from the thought. Should be, while living in a technological world, not having a technical report to be, remain able to marvel at the wonder of wonders: the world is, and there is a consciousness to know.
